This is the same state that just decided to let teachers carry guns. Really sprinting in the wrong direction aren’t they.
As fast as their disengaged and disenfranchised constituency will allow. Maybe they should defund education just a little bit more, just to be sure.
TN’s recent gerrymandering was particularly infuriating. They fucked certain jurisdiction maps just so they could go from 7-2 majority to 8-1 majority.
We know that there are well more than 11% democrats in this state. 37% voted for Biden. But let’s dramatically redraw our maps because 22% is way too much representation.
Amazing what they can do with a practically rectangular state.
Excuse me, but Tennessee is clearly a trapezoid. /s
Excellent work, Captain!
You’re both wrong, it’s the nation’s finger.
Or is it a pan to hold Kentucky’s fried chicken?
Based on that drawing, that’s not a pan…
Oh man, we’re trying! Fortunately the governor’s “school choice” voucher plans have stalled in the legislature for now.
Good! Those things are toxic to public school education funding. I wish you luck getting more neighbors voting!
Another day another story about Tennessee passing some batshit republiQan power grab.
Lick it up, Tennessee republiQans. Lick it up.
Party of small government. No not that small. Just small enough that we’re in charge.
Small minded
Small enough to fit in your bedroom.
Nothing says “well-regulated militia” like batshit crazy people with guns.
Current Supreme Court jurisprudence reads “well regulated” as 18th century sarcasm.
Party of small government until guns are threatened or women are given rights over their own bodies. Then it’s battle stations.
sMaLL GubMiNT my ass
Cities rights though
What are red flag laws?
Very simply, laws that stop dangerously crazy people from having guns.
Which is rich coming from the ‘it’s not the guns, it’s mental illness’ party.
Wow that article really doesn’t explain what they are.
Red flag laws basically allow the government to temporarily seize weapons from someone if the person is believed to be dangerous. Exact implementations vary by state.
Essentially, if your family member is acting crazy again and you feel threatened, or they’re threatening someone else with a weapon, you can petition a court to remove any weapons they have without having to convict that person of a crime.
(This bill) would prevent Tennessee cities and counties from coming up with their own emergency order of protection laws, or ERPO (aka red flag laws).
This is where the term came from (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_flag_traffic_laws).
In the US they are most often used to remove guns from a person who is a threat to themselves or others.
Basically, the police can take weapons from someone found to be a potential threat to themselves or others. Husbands who have threatened wives is the prime example.
Laws that strip you of constitutional rights if you’re neurodivergent or if your neighbor has a grudge against you.
So you think mentally unstable people should have guns?
I just got done posting in another thread about how southern states elect leaders who attack their constituents. Tennessee is in the spotlight again for being horrible. It wasn’t until the last handful of years that Tennessee wanted to challenge Florida and Alabama for shittiest place to be. Most of my life, you barely heard about them.
Nowhere in that article, is an explanation of what is meant by a ‘red flag law’.
Typically it’s a law that permits governments the ability to remove a person’s gun(s) if they are a risk. Stuff like mental health issues or domestic abuse or something.
Many thanks for that explanation. It’s good journalistic practice to explain these terms.
One would think!
Oh, so this came about because the GOP looked into their crystal ball and decided to pre-emptively fuck everything up.
“It is a little anticipatory for what’s going on at the federal level. When we see the Biden administration create their Red Flag Resource Center, and that is an attempt to try to get around some of the legislatures they don’t agree with ideologically,” explained Rep. Jody Barrett, R-Dickson.
I’m sure this is totally unrelated to that Tennessee teacher who menacingly mentioned her firearm on her possession during an argument. But what could anyone do to prevent such a horrible tragedy?
There is no corruption here, there is nothing to see here
Hey NC, Remember when Pat McCory banned counties from raising the minimum wage and literally said it was because he didn’t want foreigners moving in who might be “Attracted to higher standards of living”
Ahh…
I hope we don’t elect a Republican in November… yes I can already hear the Narrator telling future me in the middle of a life review that that’s exactly what happened.
When crazies with guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns… or something like that?
While red flag laws can be sketchy, the state has no business overruling local municipalities.
