My Subaru could use that for literally anything placed on the passenger seat. Putting your cellphone on the seat will likely set off the dinging.

Seatbelt fatalities are like 2%. Ejection fatalities are 83%. The odds are far more favorable to just wear the damn things.

Guess they’re not manly enough to just snip whatever wire is going to it.

On an tangentially related note, one thing that Georgia (the country) has taught me is to always check buckle first before pulling the belt when riding an Uber or any local taxi. Used to pull belt instinctively right away, but in there, too often have I found that, while the belt is still present, the buckle has been completely removed and the driver being visibly annoyed seeing me fumbling trying to find it. I didn’t fuss about it, though, the city traffic was so slow I didn’t feel unsafe without one, the road police was non-existent(=no fines), and it’s not really my business as a tourist to tell locals how to drive.

Tangentially related, the love action “The Tick” went way harder than it has any right to. Kinda sucks it’s only on prime now. I might be a statistical insignificant piss ant, but I have existed without directly contributing to the evil that is Amazon so far and I don’t plan on breaking that streak

Mine only goes off for about a minute. I drive Uber for pocket money, and I don’t tell anyone that. The amount of people that never buckle up is astonishing! Maybe 5% of my trips involve someone in the front seat and out of the ~1k trips I’ve done, two(Two TWO FUCKING TWO) buckled up without prompting.

I think I can get fined too here. But if you drive a respectably newish car, they won’t bother you. I went from an '05 Hyundai(when I got pulled over every two months like clockwork!) to a newish Avalon and haven’t even been followed yet.

That was the first thing I noticed. It looks like a bad design for plausible deniability; i feel like you’d have to eject it to open your beer while driving.

Surprised it doesn’t come wrapped in Paracord, with a knife and a window breaker. Full tactical seatbelt avoidance.

See it depends on the target audience. Any antisafety device that targets cops is a safety device for the general public; every cop that exits through the front of the car is dozens of minorities not harassed or fed into the prison-industrial complex.

That’s why China should make 200,000 watt electric bikes, no ABS, no TC except on takeoff, lithium battery and center of gravity located just below the rider’s balls, and offer a 95% active duty US and IDF servicemen discount. It comes in 3 colors, olive drab flag, gun metal and grey flag, and flag.

President Xi, I know you’re reading this, I have other great ideas too.

Firstly, fuck the assholes who go into the whole right wing punisher bullshit. Just getting that part of this out of the way.

Secondly, wear your fucking seatbelt. It’s literally there to save your fucking life. And the lives of those around you. Just fucking do it.

But finally, there are legitimate uses for (non punisher themed, I guess) seat belt silencers. Because of her disabilities, my mom had to use one of these for most of my life. She was unable to wear the seatbelt. There are also autistic folks with doctors notes exempting them from it because of severe sensory issues. Also, have you never put a bag of groceries on the passenger seat, only to be annoyed to hell and back by the beeping?

            Well yes?

Classic is no seat belt in the back, children killing their parents (and dying), but there are also people flying out of the front windshield into the other frontal crashing car killing people in there.

We got laws for a reason, not just to jerk with people.

Yeah i was gonna say this.

I’d never drive while a passenger isn’t wearing a belt (notwithstanding the exceptions you mentioned).

However, it is kind of annoying i cant put things on the front passenger seat while I’m running errands.

Another example would be on farms. Forever getting in and out of the car for gates or what have you, feeding livestock, et cetera.

I think the punisher skull is a bit much though.

I could use one on my empty passenger seat because the sensor in the seat is defective(where it thinks there’s always a passenger) but i instead just buckle the seatbelt across the empty seat.

This should be something that you can disable through a setting in your vehicle. Don’t make me cut wires, or trick the system into thinking I’m buckled in… just let me turn off the beeping. If I’m in my car and I’m not wearing my seat belt, then I am fully aware that I’m in my car and not wearing a seat belt! It is so frustrating to spend tens of thousands of dollars on something that is specifically designed to annoy you.

And yes, I agree… wear your fucking seat belt! But, sometimes I’m just driving to the end of my driveway and will never get above 5 mph.

But then the idiots who buy there devices would use the setting when not needed, some would inevitably die, and they would sue the car makers for letting them turn off an obviously necessary safety device. At least with these things, it shows you’re disabling the safety device and so you’re on the hook when you end your journey flying through a sheet of glass and into traffic at 40 miles an hour.

This isn’t true. There are several car companies that let you disable the alert and they aren’t getting sued. The problem is that not every car company gives you the option to do so.

Punisher is a comic book character named Frank Castle. He’s an anti-hero who targets and kills criminals, but especially corrupt cops (the worst type of criminals). Right wingers, and cops, have co-opted his logo (the Skull) because Punisher is a badass and they think it makes them look like badasses. They either aren’t aware that he hates cops, and most things right wingers like, or they just aren’t self-aware enough to realize that Frank would likely beat the shit out of them if he saw them using his skull.

I’ve flipped two cars. The only injury I had from those two incidents was cutting my finger in safety glass due to my own stupidity. The major down side to seatbelts is that they are difficult to undo when your car is upside down. The benefit of seatbelts is that they let you complain on the Internet about how hard it is to undo your seatbelt when upside down.

a highway patrol captain gave a safety seminar at my old job, and I still remember what he said about seatbelts - after decades on the highway, working countless crash scenes, he had only had to un-buckle one dead person from a crash. All of the other dead people in crashes were not wearing theirs.

Because when these dumbasses go flying through their windshield they sometimes live long enough to put a futile strain on our already fucked up heathcare system. And emergency service are not free.
