As a kid, I was taught that any gilled mushroom is an automatic “absolutely NOT” and any spongy mushroom is okay, if I recognize it and it doesn’t turn blue when I cut into it. Seems like that rule of thumb is holding up here

It’s important to know that any rule like that doesn’t necessarily hold up if you move just a few hundred kilometers.

The blue ones are the fun ones.

For legal reasons: not every blue-ing reaction has to mean Psilocybin, and not everything with Psilocybin has to be non-toxic. Don’t eat random shrooms and expect to see anything cooler than the ER. At the very least, get a reliable source of info about how to find local Psilocybe and friends, and don’t eat anything you aren’t 105% sure of what it is.

So this is svinushka, my babushka loved them.

You soak them in weak vinegar overnight. You boil them 3 times changing the water each time and then you can fry them with onions. Delicious.

My gradpa also loved them but he died young

By the way, the German guy who died was actually based and it’s a shame he was the one to pass away:

A few highlights from his 1925 article: “The destruction of the idea of the people by racial mania: A reckoning with H. Günther’s ‘Racial studies of the German people’” that was later burned by the nazis: (Keep in mind though, it is still very racist - in that it considers the existence of biological races to be a scientific fact)

    A couple quotes

It is astonishing, with what minimum of anthropological knowledge the political idea of race works.

95% of all Germans owe their existence to such a “sin”! [the sin of bastardization - that is the mixing of “races”]

The anti-Semites have no choice but to either drop their accusations against the Jews or extend them to the German people: a decision that will be interesting to see.

So they [Jews] have just as much Nordic blood in Germany as the Swiss or the Bavarians, and they have special kinship ties with the Bavarians due to their common Dinaric-Foreign Asian influence! ¹

Footnote 1: Just take a look at a picture of the leader of the Bavarian People’s Party!

The all-round “scientific” expansion of this racial world view does indeed have something impressive about it, at least for young people, and one will do well to be prepared for a corresponding impact on contemporary history.

You can see what Günther knows; even the soul colors! How does he know them? […] If he hadn’t recently interpreted the “soul colors” as “favorite colors”, one would indeed be tempted to think that he has clairvoyant abilities.

Günther’s approach is that of our weather prophets who, “based on years of observations of the relationship between the moon and the weather”, present a weather forecast for the next 100 years to an uncritical audience.

The well-known saying: Friesus non cantat [Frisians cannot sing], together with the low musical productivity of England, does not speak for the claimed musical talent of the northern race.

There’s like 10 pages more but I’m too lazy to finish reading it.

I looked at the wiki page someone linked and it took until 1980s for a scientist to link the mushroom to a specific antigen it had, and was only labeled as poisonous in most cookbooks by the 90s.

So the story could be believable

You forgot to account for the fact that people are fucking morons.

Despite the poisonings, Paxillus involutus is still consumed in parts of Poland, Russia, and Ukraine, where people die from it every year.[71][72][73][74
