    I lost a classmate in highschool, two adult friends, and several acquaintances to suicide and nearly succeeded at that myself years ago. That quote is definitely bullshit.

      I’m sorry. I personally wish I was dead but am not actively suicidal. I get family and friends calling on me over stress comments and have to explain the difference between “it would be easier” and “I’m going to” way too often. Back to back baker acts don’t help my mood.

      People don’t always understand the difference between ignore-help-and make shit more difficult. It’s complicated

    Proselyters are always stumped if you asked them why do their loved ones die? My friend asked to a Jehovah’s Witness that rhetorical question but they don’t have any reply. He and his family stopped believing in the Abrahamic god when his father passed away.

    Having grown up churchified against my will (the norm), I have always replied “You’re right, He doesn’t, nope. That’s when he takes you. When it’s too much to handle.”, etc.

    They stopped saying it to me, and pretty quickly, IIRC.

        Hey, they punished my “insubordinate” questions by making me read alllll the things… So, when I returned, chock fulla facts from their own cherry-picked & smarm-fingered “book”, they had no idea what to do, really.

            They made me compete in Bible Quiz — where we memorized an entire book of the gospel each semester. No joke, the questions were in the form of “finish the quote”, “cite the page number”, “cite the first and last verse”, etc. It was literally fucking mental. 😱 How would I not come out the other side, a weaponized fact-gatling? Idiots.

      (Although now I look at it I can see how that is not clear at all, and I might go back and change it or possibly just remove and repost it because it’s obviously bollocks).

    From a purely secular-civil standpoint, an important function of religion is to offer solace and comfort regarding the finite nature of life.

    Folk who repeat the phrase with sincerity are professing a belief in the God alluded to in the phrase, who watches over each human specifically. For those believers any obstacle which occurs is either a challenge they are meant to overcome or a fate they should accept the way Jesus of Nazareth accepted crucifixion.

    For those who don’t believe in Jesus, the God of Abraham, or that They are micromanaging our lives, the phrase is an annoying thought terminating cliche and dismissive platitude.

    I’m not sure slapping them is necessarily appropriate, though.

      It would be acceptable under their belief system because it was God’s will that they were slapped and the pain is an obstacle they must overcome.
