Side note, it’s great that Lemmy has so many other choices. Any other platform you’d be stuck with the ads. But now that they’ve exceeded my threshold for tolerance, I can drop the whole app and still get all the features I want.
I switched from Sync to Boost and it’s been a pretty good experience so far. I used to love Sync, but the developer has obviously given up support for the app. I paid for a year subscription, but when I got a new phone I couldn’t sync my purchase, so I was still getting obnoxious ads. Posted in the community and reached out to the developer directly… and nothing. Cancelled my subscription and I’m never going back.
I have an always on VPN to my pihole. Boost only has ads when I fuck something up and have to disable the VPN. Which is every few years, and the experience with the internet in general makes me so thankful for pihole.
I use sync too; though I’m running it through proton VPN (largely due to my govs increasingly authoritarian stance on internet freedoms, but that’s neither here nor there), which has built in ad and tracker blocking, so I don’t see any of the ads in sync.
Switch to a better app like voyager. The sync dev isn’t great (I admittedly have an axe to grind) and I thought I saw they were abandoning the project.
But either way, grab an app that isn’t trying to monetize you like they do. And don’t pay for the app, they will eventually rug pull it (they did it to me with the reddit app years ago)
Yeah I’m aware of syncs controversy; the app hasn’t seen any updates in a year or so. But using an adblock to circumvent the ads isn’t supporting the dev, and it works well enough for my needs. I definitely wouldn’t pay for a premium account; feels very anti-fediverse in nature.
I did start to use voyager on my Linux phone, though it doesn’t seem to connect to my home instance. Admittedly that’s via the web app, so perhaps there’s some issues with connectivity there rather than voyager in general; but that experience sort of solidified me on sync on my android. I setup a second account on db0 and it worked with voyager, but I’m generally pretty happy where I am.
Feddit.uk have setup a blorp frontend which I may just convert to a web app for use, but I just haven’t got around to it.
I started getting these ads on my Lemmy app (sync). Anyone got a reccomendation for another app that also does keyword blacklisting?
Sync has ADS?!
How are you still tolerating ads?
Momentum, I guess.

Not a lot of places left where you can do that.
You can do that with the whole fediverse.
Voyager is the best, it’s the spiritual successor of Alien Blue and Apollo.

Actually, I should donate a few bucks.
Voyager!
Tried voyager, doesn’t seem to have keyword filtering/blacklisting… Maybe I need to be logged in for the option to show up?
Settings > Filters & Blocks:
(while logged in at least)
Options options!
I use Voyager and I have tons of communities, users, and keywords blocked. It is account-dependent.

This is what it looks like behind an ad blocker:

https://vger.app/ is great.
Summit (!summit@lemmy.world) is nice, it has keyword filters and is very customizable in general.
Ooh, this looks great, and its got the same filtering options. Thank you!
