I don’t play hollow knight, but a friend who does told me there’s a line in the game that strongly implies she’s a lesbian. Methinks that implanted horny bug smut into many a gamer.
She has multiple journal entries about how she’s had mates in the past but since she’s a demi goddess thus being immortal less something kills her. She’s literally outlived all her mates.
It fills in a lot of background why hornet is closed off to the world and overly pragmatic in speech while her actions are that of someone who clearly cares far far too much about those around her for the words she speaks to hold any weight.
She’s a lonely person doomed to watch all those she loves and care for die over and over for eternity. While she does her best to close herself off to keep everyone at arms length and her interactions purely transactional.
Yet she fails over and over. Becoming attached and making friends. Going above and beyond to risk life and claw to save those she tells to not risk themselves for she selfishly claims she simply wishes to see no more death. But in reality she just can’t handle the heart ache of watching people die so she helps those who risk themselves in their pursuit.
Hornet is a sad somber character. A great look into the curse of immortality and the weight of responsibly that comes with it.

I must have missed that line because Hornet never struck me as someone with much sexual interest.

Bugs have pheromones so I guess it’s just a matter of the right scent
