While I agree with your second argument that Russia would probably just call them on their bluff, I don’t think they’d need long range ballistic missiles. They seem to operate on russian soil a lot, and you could put a big nuke into a larger van easily.

If the gunner/commander were even looking in the right direction, nothing tells us their lens wasn’t dirty, the optics broken or everything was shaking too violently for a proper look. It’s easy to overestimate how much you can really see out of your steel coffin, especially when it’s 40 year old soviet steel coffins.
