  • At that point the computers is promoted (or enslaved depending on pov) and called a (home) server.

One nuance. You don’t need to provide access from outside your home network if you don’t want to open the ports, i prefer that most of services remain local for security anyway. Once those ports are open, you or anyone else can connect to the services using your_external_ip_address:portnumber

You also dont need to run it 24/7, i started with a minecraft server that ran on planned times only, then a system that was online during afternoon-evening but not at night-morning.

It is also possible if not recommended, to use a vpn to tunnel in your network and than you can access everything just like if you where at home from anywhere.

If it all sounds intimidating, a laptop to try things out will do fine. Don’t expect a perfect polished system on first try, i have redesigned my network from scratch multiple times over the years. If you do want to get serious there are plenty of offices that have “old” desktop servers with pretty impressive hardware, the fans may make a lot of noise though.

The Hardware in my current home server is mostly parts that got upgraded in my main pc. I have reached a point where i am willing to sometimes spend extra money on what my partner sometimes dubs “my second pc” but it is also doing a lot for us at this point. Much cheaper then a store-bought NAS.

To be fair i do care quite a bit about that. Phones just make bad computers to me. Small screen and half is used by a keyboard.

They seem designed to frustrate me so “it just works (most times)” is the only way i can stomach owning one.

I have a dream where apple is forced to make ios fully open source and where screen/input devices can freely stream any system/OS from a dedicated server.

Iphones are so “cleverly” dumb it makes them usable.

  • Autism is that you?

“When we walk down the street, we know what we need to pay attention to—and what we don’t. Robots, on the other hand, treat all the information they receive about their surroundings with equal importance. Driverless cars have to continuously analyze data about things around them whether or not they are relevant. This keeps drivers and pedestrians safe, but it draws on a lot of energy and computing power.

  • 25 MB wasn’t even enough to send a single full res screenshot of my desktop.

Its 2024 and we still lack the basic functionality of file sharing between peers without a corp dictator restricting and snooping.

Not that the functionality does not exist (p2p, literally) but if my grandma cant receive the family pictures its not basic.

EDIT: it is possible i am remembering this from when it was 8MB.

Empty desktop is just a few kb but it was not that hard to open enough stuff to exceed 10MB

Til that i have been sending screenshots of only half my screen for not reason

AI is going to kill copyright

Humans should kill copyright once they realize how detrimental it is.

Ai is the most obvious sign yet that walling of intellectual ideas and restricting freedom of inspired thoughts is a incredibly nonsensical thing to do.

I am not a fan of corpo AI but i do perceive that what these models simulate is similar to how humans reycle their environment for creativity.

The future could go many ways, i wont claim to predict what we do but with mutual destruction as an option we need to do an effort to hope and aim for postive outcomes, lest we destroy the wold because we’re convinced that is the logical flow of events.

No, i think i get it but difficult to explain.

    Say X, X, X in a row

    Then say

    Xylo , Xen, Xono

The Raw letter has different phonet-x to how it’s often applied.

When were talking about teaching kids the alphabet we need to train both individual and applied letters

I do realize that this might be very cultural and language dependent but i am pretty sure we’re talking plain english.

  • You mean zero stars because many nights the moon alone provides enough reflection to blind the sky essentially.

I was an adult before i learned that in actual darkness we can see the andromeda system and the beautiful colors of our own galaxy at large with our naked eye.

I used to think pictures like these required super expansive special camaras… and to be fair i was correct in that assessment. But i failed to realize the ultimate light sensor is simply our own eyes.

The sky is beautiful, its sad how hard it is to catch a real glimpse of it in proper light contrast
