I had to switch recently because I wanted to try out font ligatures and it turns out Alacritty refuse to implement support for that 😬

Spreading FUD is just this guy’s way of trying to keep the hype alive. Techbro bullshittery 101. Reminds me of Crypto YouTube a few years back.
Those shitty investments won’t pay themselves back on their own, you know?
I wish I could ignore this, but it’s harming the environment so much that we can’t just ignore those greedy shitheads.
“AI” is what put Google into trouble to begin with… Sure, let’s double-down on the shittiness, I don’t see how anything could go wrong.
This is ridiculous. The world doesn’t have to bend the knee to LLMs, they’re supposed to be useful tools to solve problems.
And I don’t see why asking them to help with math problems would be unreasonable.
And even if the formulation of the test was not done the right way, your argument is still invalid. LLMs were being used as an aid. The test wasn’t given to the LLM directly. But students failed to use the tool to their advantage.
This is yet another hint that the grift doesn’t actually serve people.
Another thing these bullshit machines can’t do! The list is getting pretty long.
About the calculator argument… Well, the calculator is still used in class, because it makes sense in certain contexts. But nobody ever sold calculators saying they would teach you math and would be a do-everything machine.
God, my sister bought a can because she was visiting and wanted to try it, and didn’t eat it before leaving so I thought I’d eat it to get rid of it… 😩
I can’t remember the last time I gagged while eating something, but this caused me to almost vomit mom’s spaghetti.
That’s dog food. Not meant for human consumption.
Canadian wine would like to have a word 🤭
Is Groovy still a thing?
No no you don’t understand, using CCP is racist
🤭
Was he dumb, or did the Putin regime threaten him with nad consequences if he didn’t get in?
I don’t want to spread rumors or anything, but the stupidity theory sounds a bit fishy.

Some on Lemmy are still pro-LLMs. Quite a lot of folks actually.
The brilliant minds of Lemmy yesterday: " we’re way past caring about GHG emissions" when talking about the LLM-craze of 2023.
Nice!
Restaurants aren’t fighting regular folks to make food supplies scarce and jack up food prices. You can choose to not go to a restaurant and that won’t affect your grocery bill. They don’t privatize food, they offer an actual, non-essential service which is to cook it for you, which deserves compensation. A restaurant organized as a worker coop is ethical.
OTOH, parasitic landlords are responsible for the scarcity/prices of housing. If you don’t rent their appartments, you’re still affected by their greed because the prices are high because of them.
It doesn’t compare at all.
I don’t find it weird, no, because it’s backed with factual bits of information, and it’s true that, despite being interesting as far as the science goes, the tech failed to find its place (much like crypto whose only legit use case is crime).
You say a 58% decrease in energy consumption at Google is nothing, I’d say this is already a huge chunk of Google’s emissions that would be gone, which at that scale isn’t insignificant. And Google is not the only tech titan in the world.
If you don’t care about GHG emissions, some (a lot) of us do. And we’ll keep holding criminals accountable for their actions. Be it in Big Oil or in Big Tech.
Another thing: when talking about climate change, nobody blames immigrants because blaming immigrants for things is something rightoids do and they don’t care much about climate.
On the other hand, guess where migrants will come once their place of origin ends up under the ocean, or when it becomes so hot you can no longer live there? And guess who’s going to be the most affected by the massive influx of climate migrants?
The 2023 AI hype train caused Google’s emissions to dramatically increase †, delaying their efforts to become carbon neutral. This is no small increase, and humans on this planet can’t afford the energy bill, especially if other criminals start emulating Google and consuming TWhs like there’s no tomorrow. All this for tech that doesn’t work and, in the wrong hands, can lead us to a dystopian future.
There are genuine reasons to be mad. And, unlike, say, Big Oil, which has a status quo to uphold, these cynical bastards started their evil businesses after the climate doom era. They have no excuse.
At least restaurants provide useful service…
I do despise billionaires with their private jets, or owners of gigantic pickup trucks that use them to shop for groceries, and I’m not unique in that regard. I can be mad at multiple things at the same time. It’s not mutually exclusive. And it’s definitely not manufactured.
Allow me to offer reasons why: just like the blockchain before, the usage of resources is absurd (which is infuriating) for something that barely works (which is laughable), and the tech is being pushed by the same loathable and arrogant grifters that lead us into a wall at full throttle with crypto.
I’m not just snobbing the naive optimists: I’m actually mad at them for what they’re doing to the environment.
The answer is pretty simple. You are a “normie” with your own particularities, like every other human on this planet.
Don’t fall into the trap of thinking like the idiot you’re replying to that we are smarter than everybody else. In many cases, the dumb-dumbs calling the (stupid) shots are from within our ranks, or used to be techies, and that doesn’t make them immune to errors. The arrogance in the person you’re replying to is unwarranted, and they’re just plain wrong.
We’re not the chosen ones - we’re just as special as everybody else.
Don’t feed the troll. This one is obvious.
