Open to reconsider my views in light of good-faith counter-arguments but also willing to defend what’s right, even when it’s unpopular. My goal is to engage in dialogue that seeks truth rather than scoring points.
Pirating movies or games for personal use is for profit. You’re saving money, which is effectively the same thing as earning money. The difference is in scale, not in kind. Just because you as an individual person are causing less harm by pirating content than a major corporation is, it doesn’t mean you’re not still commiting the exact same crime both legally and morally speaking.
10 - 15 euros probably
Lack of OIS on the camera. Literally the only bad thing about it.
Ironically I came to Lemmy with the hope of meeting less people like you who act like a complete jerk towards strangers for no reason.
Billionaires and starving people tend to live in different countries though. What ever makes someone a billionaire in the US isn’t probably the same thing that makes someone else starve in Africa. One could even say that thanks to the wealthy westerners there’s less and less starving people in those places. There’s been a huge decrease in world wide poverty over the last few decades.
Most of the threads I’ve started (on other accounts) have been about ideas rather than events or people and they’ve reliably made it to the front page, so there’s definitely demand for it. There’s probably several reasons for why threads like that are so rare, but I’d imagine a big one is fear. The reception on Lemmy to a post like that can, and usually will be quite hostile. People do have opinions and they’re quick to hop in and tell you’re wrong about something but at the same time they’ll think twice before putting their own ideas under public scrutiny.
I’ve never lost a single pair. The ones I use currently are over 15 years old. I can only remember owning 4 different pairs but there are probably few more that I had in my childhood but no longer remember.
You would if piracy wasn’t an option. Maybe not all of it, but some of it.
We can’t pirate a company into bankruptcy because there are still people paying for the movies and games we download. If everyone pirated content, these companies would go bankrupt, and there would no longer be new content to pirate. Online pirates often justify their behavior by telling themselves a story about how they’re ‘sticking it to the man,’ but in reality, we’re just freeriders enjoying the fruits of others’ labor. We’re leeches with no moral ground to stand on.
Well that’s not just how I see it, that’s how it is.
Also, piracy is illegal. If you think taking copyrighted work of others without permission and training your AI with it should be illegal aswell, then there’s no contradiction there. The people I do take issue with is the ones who see an issue with training AI but not with online piracy.
There’s no practical difference between the two.
If I save 100 bucks a month from my expenses it means I have an extra 100 bucks to spend on something else.
If I earn additional 100 bucks a month it means I have an extra 100 bucks to spend on something else.
They’re saving money which is effectively the same thing.
No, but they’re saving money which is effectively the same thing. There’s no practical difference between earning 50 bucks and getting a 50 buck discount.
I don’t see how this addresses my question. Just because someone is causing bigger harm it doesn’t justify causing a little harm. Stealing a lollipop is less bad than stealing a car but it’s still both stealing. AI companies can afford paying for the material just like online pirate can afford paying for the movie.
The original source material is still there. They just made a copy of it. If you think that’s stealing then online piracy is stealing as well.
I never fully figured out how the people who are against AI companies using copyrighted content on the training data fit that in with their general attitude towards online piracy. Seems contradictory to be against one but not another.
Let’s hear your plan then.
I wouldn’t know. My office moves on 4 wheels and is full of tools. She’s the one pulling the pranks on me and they’re never good - just expensive.
It may be coming from those popular AskReddit threads, such as: Tell me what you do for a living without telling what you do for a living.
Right? Who the hell would agree to a price like that. That would cover my mortage for 2 months.
