Well, like I said, there is still a chance of collateral damage, which is why there has been so much study to try and make sure that isn’t going to happen. We’ve been sitting on the ability to do this for a long time. As for chances of killing other species, I don’t think that is a risk from the method. They basically just breed mosquitoes of the targeted breed, and modify their genes so they can only have male offspring which can also only produce male offspring, etc.

The biggest reason it may be different this time is previously we were all like, “let’s exterminate dogs,” and it turns out dogs are important. This time is more like “let’s exterminate pitbulls.” There will still be plenty of mosquitos around if the plan is ever put into motion, we are only targeting a very small slice of them. That doesn’t mean there won’t be issues, it could well be just as big a mistake as all the previous times. But at least it is more likely to work out.

I mean, they made to strafe tanks. Pretty sure they were actually terrible at that when first introduced.

The reason the image is different using the same text prompt is because it randomly generates a seed for each time it runs. Presumably the copyright would include all the settings, including the seed. All of that kept the same will produce the same image, every time.

I think the logical conclusion of copyrighted prompts would include not just the input prompt but the version number of the program, any settings, the seed, etc. Basically everything you would need to copy that exact image, because all of that together would produce an exact copy.

New England is pretty chill. Well, like anywhere with flowing water some regions are flood risks, but that is all very predictable if you go in looking for that info. Aside from that the worst you can count on is snow and ice storms. But at least property damage is usually low, just gaps without power in some areas. Frozen pipes are more preventable, but also more likely to cause significant damage. We do technically get some little earthquakes. And I think once a year or so tornados do happen, but the last time I remember one causing real damage I was in high-school. We actually were going to an event in Colorado and we flew over the storm system that would result in the tornado. That was like… God around 20 years ago T_T

I suspect you’re right. But there really is never a good way to tell with these kinds of experimental techs. It could be a runaway chain of improvement. Or it is probably even odds that there is a visible and clear decline before it peters out, or just suddenly slams into a beick wall with no warning.

The point of this thread is that Starlink only exists to solve this problem because the ISPs were paid to do it the old fashioned way and decided to fuck off with the cash instead. It wouldn’t have solved the RV issue, but if nost rural areas had the cable internet the government bought, then Starlink likely never gets off the ground, pun intended.

It has as the sole cause. But when you have a couple big spinny bits, there is going to be some gyroscopic effect, and it does help keep it upright. It just can’t on its own, it provides a small assist.

Sapient, not sentient. Sci-fi has co-opted the word, but sentient basically means able to feel emotions. There are plenty of sentient species right here at home. Sapient is the word sci-fi usually wants, there are no known sapient species aside from humans. Though some may argue that a couple other animals may qualify, it’s a very fuzzy concept that is hard to identify with a being unable to communicate abstract concepts.

Don’t forget Rogue Trader. Falls into many of the usual CRPG pitfalls, but is still definitely solid despite that.

As a big fan of Helldivers, they aren’t really that similar. They aren’t completely different either, but SM leans closer to a hack n’ slash. Definitely space for both in my rotation.
