they do OK but services side including AI make way more…
they already have an their AI division earns way more than the Windows division. Matters little to them about Windows numbers dropping because in reality PCs as we know it are declining far more rapidly that anyone wants to say
transitioning away from raid but I do love zfs for flexibility. A lot of the data I have is important for someone or somebody, so zfs and a decent backup solution is in use just to make sure. I went bananas and picked up a used Supermicro 4-node server that takes dual E5 Zeons (V1 or V2) with 2xE5-2620s and 49 gig ram in each node for £80 (I’m in the UK). Plenty of power and next is to upgrade the cpus to slightly better cpus to reduce power as it currently uses 2 nodes and I am pulling around 300 watts most of the time. Backup solution is an old Ryzen 3200G with 32 gig ram that runs truenas and has 5x3tb spinny drives in it
It was minding it’s own business and adding them… lol 😀
no issues with temps here in the UK, but the fans don’t sound happy…
Cloudflare aren’t perfect, but I still use them because for a free account the benefits outweigh the negatives like this… However to say the worlds leading publishers and AI are on board is simply not true…
Seen plenty of people who think this is a bad thing, do they just want everything to be crawled. I mean I don’t think this is the saviour but it has got to be better than wholesale theft
Try a few distros they all pretty much have strengths and weaknesses. Run Linux boxes here for servers and other tasks and a mix of uses
I must be in the minority but generally I like Win 11. Most of my clients still on Windows as well so I have to keep up to date…
Because plenty of people care very little about data or security but see all those people on there… so explaining how it is bad matters little as they’ve used facebook for over a decade
Not seen anything quite like that to be honest, but I do have a service running a pretty decent chat room system that doesn’t keep any data after the room is nuked. Not quite the same I know… but it works well for me!
It is, but as many are artists in some ways it is that they dislike the most
The tinternet is getting like the Wild West again, circa early 200s and Napster and all that… This will pass, dunno when or how but it will pass, or perhaps we will start getting everything paywalled so LLMs can’t just scrape data without some sort of payment. I don’t actually know many people that like AI nowadays
Here in the UK Musk is just seen as an idiot. Some decent European EV solutions coming along but the Chinese cars are so much better value than Tesla OR the main European makes. Couldn’t happen to a nicer megalomaniac and as a plus I love seeing the monthly SpaceX explosions
to be fair I really just used my relay for myself and didn’t run into that many issues… but this IS the reality if you want to help others like you said…
Hey welcome to the fun of multiple drives. If you have the drives available then truenas (which uses OpenZFS) is better IMHO than hardware raid as it is just more resilient and you can (most of the time) move zfs data/pools around easily. I’m guessing ye olde Dell has a Dell raid card, and whilst they are ok, zfs is way better nowadays. If you value your data then parity and mirroring make for way better usage of drive space if you are careful. I mean zfs easily can support losing a whole drive (or 2 if you wish) without losing data, and the rebuild speed is pretty much 10X faster than old dell raid cards IF a drive does fail. Truenas has some great features built in for backup etc. and a decent truenas setup is way more flexible than a lot of the cheaper pre-built nas boxes as well. Of course, your mileage might vary, but I wouldn’t be without my truenas setup now. It also serves via shares to the android tv box for movies etc. I don’t even bother with plex. Whilst you might keep a single drive as a backup of the backup that pretty much wouldn’t be needed in zfs as the data is pretty damn secure with parity, but you might not agree. The other beauty of using zfs is that it is perfectly happy to use sata/sas/m.2 drives or whatever as long as they are accessed directly, though with an old dell raid card if it doesn’t support it mode or pass through for the drives it doesn’t work - zfs just needs simple access to the drive
I just installed a port of AndroidTV on mine and then changed over to an android tv box because they have a remote that just works etc. Connected to our surround sound system>projector it is just easy to do. I don’t even bother with plex anymore as the NAS box just serves files over ethernet/wifi and the box can, if needed, just download the file. You can then, of course install apps on android and do it that way if needed
I agree Wordpress isn’t cool BUT I have so many years that I still find it the quickest way to launch a site for a lot of people. Oh and the block editor is fantastic once you get used to it, I wouldn’t go back now…
Hey there are various ways to do it, but if you have a suitable bit of hardware I’d self host at home - just because! Pi 4B would be better but you can quickly get loads of traffic so if you broadband isn’t great it can slow things down! If you want to host a tor relay and self host other stuff there are means and ways to do that as well. I have run a tor relay before through yunohost for example
Been saying exactly that for years but it hasn’t happened yet… It will when the last people (like my age) want to use Windows at home, but by then Macs will have gone as well because the pc as we know it will be finished. I can see pcs as such being gone in say 10 years and it will all be mobile devices as such, and I include laptops in that. Wifey has just lost the last installed program needed for her work from home. All web/connected apps to work from now, and when they go down the whole company stops work(ing). Lost 3 whole days this year so far as the whole company couldn’t function for various reasons
