I remember when reddit used to be a site where the top comment was always something interesting and insightful and sometimes even given by an expert.

But then it all became shitposts and jokes at the top level.

Then I came to Lemmy and found what felt a lot like old reddit, the top comment being something decent and thought provoking.

Took less than 6 months to just turn into reddit. Thanks for contributing to the enshittification of another site with your inaccurate but funny top comment. And now my inbox will be flooded with people who tell me not to take things too seriously and that it isn’t that big a deal.

I guarantee you within a year and a half lemmy will be worse than reddit.

And people like you will be the ones who helped make it that way.

I remember the vitriol of old reddit. I believe you are contributing to that more than helping.

Reddit was never pure in terms of discussion or kindness; I think you’ve got some heavily tinted rose glasses on. But reddit succeeded and brought you the deep, insightful discussion you crave because the enthusiasts were there. And enthusiasts are human, they are not all heartless cogs there to infodump and complain. The most knowledgeable, well-read, and well-spoken people I know are also ones to crack jokes and make their passions accessible and interesting.

If you want healthy discussion, I strongly believe you should allow at least a bit of levity and let people speak a little more freely. Chastising people for not being insightful enough will turn away plenty of the people you want to keep.

Let neckbeards and normies mingle. It’s okay to have fun.

Also worth mentioning: this is Microblog Memes. It’s in the name.

And there are feces particles in every breath you take in, where the important part is, is the concentration.

Compare frontpages from 2009 to 2017 and put them side by side. Which version has the highest shit density?

False. You are contributing to misinformation and are therefore a shit poster.

You have made the internet worse for your presence. Please go back to shitting up digg with your fossilised takes.

It isn’t “obviously true” and you would realise that if you considered the supposition more carefully.

His claims is that every breath you take contains faeces.

Firstly the linked studies show bacteria in the air, bacteria is a component of faeces but do not constitute faeces by themselves.

Secondly every breath? Yes outside of a chip making fab clean room. I see no evidence for faeces in the air in a reasonably clean room. Where’s the source? How are faeces being aerosolised ?

                  It’s implausible.

But the study outdoors that detected bacteria in American Midwest cities!!! Yea there’s zero chance those cities are near farms where they spray with fertiliser. Zero.

Unless you are talking chipfab clean rooms every breath you take in has the shit dust of thousands in it.

Linking popsci and not checking their sources which misinterprets findings from a single study of bacteria in the air… in some Midwestern US cities.

Congrats, you have the critical thinking and research skills of your average Facebook loving anti-vaxxer.

Incorrect again! There is a link in there to an aggregation by the Mayo clinic on MANY studies and articles that were used in forming the content of that webpage.

Secondly, are you trying to imply that Popular Science, one of the most rigorous and publicly approved science publishings would still be hosting an article from seven years ago if it had been refuted?

You, sir/madam/other: __________ are cherrypicking without taking the diligence to read the article for the stepping off point that it is. We are not in a formal debate, I do not need to provide you an ACA formatted reference list. I gave you a link that has data and a link to a lot more other data. It is not my fault you chose to stop when you saw the midwest air study.

Another source you can choose is your universities anthropology department, a simple 2 minute conversation with them will confirm that Yes, wherever humans exist, there is a cloud of shit particles.

You are being deliberately obstinate because you are incapable of admitting your stupid trollery was ill-formed and poorly envisioned. It’s ok, I’ll say it for you:

You’re wrong, you’re sorry, and you’ll stop doing from now on.

If by We you mean humanity, then Yes. Yes We deserve it. It is what we are until we haven’t been so for a long while.

Humans are not that great. We over consume to the point of self and environmental harm, we hurt others for entertainment and/or profit, and are built upon biologic hardware that reinforces those behaviors.

Not all jokes are shitposts. There are low effort, meme-ish responses, and then there is the social commentary of the jester. The joke form softens the impact and makes the recipient intelectually process something to recieve, or ‘get’, the humor. That helps concepts evolve and spread. The seed takes root, it doesnt just bounce on hard dirt.

Trolls are obviously drains on the system, identify them and block the user accounts. Maybe develop a troll list for users to import, but that gets into control and authoritarian issues. And i will admit there exists the rare very skillful trolls that honestly deserve a golf clap.

complains that Reddit used to be a platform for civil discussion and is just full of rage bait now

says he has a medical condition causing him to be mad at everybody and that he should therefore be exempted from any rules against raging

accuses anyone who tells him Reddit was never good of being the reason why it got bad

              I’m honestly a little impressed.

Seriously though, thanks for the block mate. I eagerly look forward to never seeing another one of your posts ever again.

Enshittification is specifically a platform getting worse because it needs to shift resources to its advertisers or itself. If you think this is happening on Lemmy, I would you curious how, otherwise please do not contribute to diluting the term and making it into a synonym of “thing getting worse”

Enshittification, per the rules of english, is when you turn something into shit.

Don’t really care what Corey Doctorow wants to refer to, but he’s welcome to make up a word that doesn’t have a meaning already per the rules of the English language.

It’s not dilution, it’s a natural expansion. Doctrow’s original formulation describes one kind of motivation, cash profit. There are other forms of profit, political and social, and as the symptoms and results are the same as oldschool enshittification, and the word itself doesn’t have an intrinsic connection to economic incentive.

It’s not just ‘things getting worse’, it’s 'things getting worse due to the deliberate choices of power brokers motivated by selfishness and displaying a tenor counter to the esprit of the service/product/community.
