minus-squareidiomaddict@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkarrow-up11·edit-22か月前They’re as closely related as a human and a lemur. The Spanish just got confused between the names batata and papa and called them similar names. Yams are even further away from both sweet potatoes and potatoes.
minus-squareCyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.delinkfedilinkarrow-up3arrow-down4·edit-22か月前Sweet potatoes are more potatoes than onions are potatoes. What are yams though?
minus-squareidiomaddict@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkarrow-up6·2か月前They’re fucking monocots, so way the hell removed (like onions). But none of these plants even share a family, order is the closest it gets.
minus-squareByteJunk@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkarrow-up3·2か月前What do you mean, potatoes are closer to tomatoes than to sweet potatoes or onions? Botany is a scam.
minus-squareColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.delinkfedilinkarrow-up1·2か月前Most of them pictured aren’t even French cut.
minus-squareVictor@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkarrow-up1·2か月前I know… Potato in French is “pomme de terre”, “apple of the earth”. Today you learned.
minus-squareneukenindekeuken@sh.itjust.workslinkfedilinkarrow-up15·2か月前It is not a potato. Potatoes are a member of the Nightshade family. Sweet “Potatoes” are from the Morning Glory family. Completely separate genus. Even though they can be mostly cooked and prepared similarly, they are not related.
