Because the anonymity and impersonalness of this site is what makes it much more accessible to many of us than non-anonymous social media. Some of us have an easier time interacting with ideas if it’s impersonal. Knowing who the people on the site are lessens the appeal and accessibility.

Well, what would you have us do? Not be shown basic respect by getting our pronouns (which ioo doesn’t de-anonymise us as much as you seem to be implying) right or having to point out things time and time again until people ‘get’ it (for the other things in our profile)?

We personally think this is a silly argument and the point is the people, otherwise why would anyone or anymany come here if they weren’t shown such basic respect?

Communities are not just about the ideas and discussions that make them up but the people that are a part of them. Else we might as well all just talk to ‘AI’ chat bots all day as that would provide the same experience as you seem to be implying is wanted by most.

        It’s worth bothering to care.

Not all of us are neurotypical. Those of us who aren’t and have differing needs deserve space. There is plenty of choice for non-anonymous social media.

We’re not neurotypical either, so this argument doesn’t work ioo.

Again, pronouns don’t de-anonymise as much as you seem to be implying. They’re just a politeness. A lot of us have fought long and hard for such things, to be told that all the work we have put in isn’t worth it because others can’t be bothered to do a simple click or tap and read is in our opinion erasure and we don’t accept that in our communities.

Also we don’t buy the idea that Lemmy is inherently meant to be anonymous to such extreme degrees, or at all. If you don’t want to reveal yourself at all, that’s fine. But we are fine having our pronouns etc out there and feel strongly that they should be respected and we’re going to keep pointing them out.

There’s many different types of neurodivergent with many different needs, and it hurts to be dismissed about that. I’m trans too and I never tried to convince you that your experience has got to be the same as mine. Going into profiles destroys the anonymous safe space for me. I just want to engage with posts and comments, not profiles. This is overwhelmingly the culture on here, and that’s the reason why it’s the only social media in comfortable using. There’s plenty of social media that isn’t like that.

We sorry you’re hurt. But we’re also hurt by the idea that we can’t get basic respect. So is our only solution to really write out our pronouns etc every single time? If so, so be it. Though that seems untenable for many here.

We also don’t agree that that’s the culture here. However, if it is then again, why should profiles even exist as an option? Maybe somebody should just open an issue to have them removed and we’ll just have to tell people everything that would have been in them every time as seems to be the case anyway.

Edit: We feel comfortable using this social media because we can be who we really are, even if that’s semi-anonymous you seem to be trying to push us to go to another where we’re fully de-anonymised (which we don’t want). But there is nothing we wish to use apart from this and other things on fedi: kbin, mbin, piefed and whenever it gets released sublinks will seemingly all have the same ‘culture’ but there’s nothing else we want to use apart from fedi things. So what would you have us do?

Thank you. I’m also sorry you’re hurt. Guess what I’m saying is, this is the ONE space I’m comfortable, BECAUSE profiles don’t matter. Theres profiles so there’s accountability and the option for bans so this doesn’t become 4chan. Do you have a suggestion where I could go that’s safe for me if this isn’t it? I don’t know of anything else.

We didn’t mean accounts, we meant getting rid of the option for any information to be in ‘profiles’ if others aren’t interested in, or are unable to read them for a plethora of reasons.

No, we don’t. We wish you happy travels and enjoying your stay wherever you should end up, even if it’s here. Despite everything our desire wasn’t for you to leave, only to figure out a solution.
