Zram is legit. Fedora by default swaps to zram which lives in ram. Also, these days used Intel Optane drives are super cheap and practically made to be swap. Not as cheap as “downloading” ram, and not as fast as actual ram, but a great bargain for things like homelabs where cost is more important than performance.

Virtual memory is very real, but I recommend using it only on important drives holding longterm, indispensable work, or cherished memories. If you aren’t on your knees, weeping at the notion that your files might disappear, your drive is not yet important enough to hold virtual memory
